Dr. Carlos Omphroy has a thriving full-range ophthalmology practice for the whole family based in Mililani. He also sees patients in Honolulu at 615 Piikoi, and at the Laser Eye Center of Hawaii. He was the first surgeon in Hawaii to perform PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) and one of the first to perform LASIK (Laser Assisted in-situ Keratomileusis) here. Besides laser vision correction, Dr. Omphroy specializes in cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.
Dr. Omphroy was named a VISX star surgeon for 1999, placing him in the top five percent of refractive surgeons in the nation. Because of his experience in laser refractive surgery, he is certified to train surgeons in the use of the VISX laser.
Dr. Omphroy is a visiting Professor for ORBIS International, the world’s only flying, teaching eye school. He is on the clinical staff of the University of Hawaii School of Medicine in Family Practice.
Burma, China and Cuba have benefited from Dr. Omphroy’s experience through ORBIS, an international, privately-funded teaching program. The physician-teachers work out of a DC-10 plane parked on the tarmac in airports of developing countries for three-week sessions. The first-class area is outfitted as an auditorium where local physicians observe operations being conducted in the main cabin on a closed-circuit television.
Dr. Omphroy also helped bring LASIK to Guam, visiting ophthalmologists and optometrists there and conducting seminars for interested Guam residents.
He is also one of only two eye surgeons in Hawaii to have performed laser surgery on another surgeon. His patient was Dr. Jenkins.
